James Dole started growing Pineapple in Wahiawa on Oahu in 1901. Over the next 50 years his company, the Hawaiian Pineapple Company grew to be the largest pineapple producer in the world. Dole also purchased Lanai Island in 1922 to raise pineapple.
Artist and Textile designer John Keoni Meigs created this design in the 1940's, paying tribute to the Hawaiian pineapple, revered as the fruit of the islands.
