In 1832, three vaquero arrived in Hawaii from Mexico to break in horses and round up the wild Big Island cattle. The Hawaiians called these Spanish-speaking vaquero "Paniolo," (or some say "Paniola") from the word "espanol." The Paniolo carried with them coiled lassos made of rawhide or horsehair. These lassos were highly prized, and the Hawaiians called them "Kaula Ili".
